As alluded to in a previous post, I’ve whipped up a simple JavaScript utility to help you control your Captivate SWFs using JavaScript.
The biggest selling point for this utility is that it not only contains all of the built-in Captivate ‘variable’ functionality, but it also contains some extra functionality created by chaining some variables together.

I recently worked on an e-learning course that required embedding some PDFs into an HTML file. PDF embedding piqued my curiosity, and has become something of a pet project. I decided it would be nice to have a JavaScript script that could dynamically embed PDFs as easily as SWFObject allows SWF embedding. I managed to whip up a script, and decided to name it PDFObject. (I know, I know… what a creative name!) As you may have inferred from the name, the concept and functionality is pretty similar to SWFObject.
JavaScript can control the playback of Captivate-generated SWFs. I posted some examples about a year ago (example one, example two), but someone recently reminded me I haven’t posted any instructions or explanations for my examples. Here’s a quickie explanation of how you can control a Captivate-generated SWF using JavaScript.
Adobe Captivate 3 doesn’t have a built-in mechanism for sending quiz results to JavaScript. Here’s a workaround you may find useful.
Eventually someone in the e-learning field is going to get slapped with a lawsuit just like Target did. If that’s what it takes to wake people up, I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later!
SCO stands for shareable content object. If a course is not built to be shareable, it isn’t really a SCO, even if it uses SCORM for packaging. Spinning SCORM’s communication element off into its own standard — without the name SCORM — would free SCORM to truly be a Shareable Content Object Reference Model, and would free non-aggregators from having to deal with the complexities of SCORM.
A common thread in many of the posts I’ve been reading is that standards do not lead to innovation, but rather that innovation leads to standardization.
